Nanking

Accolades: The King’s School Year 10 Documentary competition winner

We must never tolerate the distortion and negation of history.

“The Nanjing Massacre is a crucial chapter of World War II that is almost completely missing from history textbooks and in people’s consciousness. There are lessons to learn.” – Ying-Ying Chang, mother of Iris Chang.

Made from over a dozen archival sources, Nanking is a compilation documentary that aims to expose the malicious ways in which the Japanese media and government distorted and downplayed Japanese war crimes during WWII, particularly the Rape of Nanjing, where over 300 000 innocent civilians perished. To this day, the Japanese government refuses to apologise for their acts of – what is now widely regarded as – genocide. The documentary is not purposed to proliferate the cycle of hate and anger between previously at-war nations, but rather it seeks to inform audiences on the ways important historical events can be distorted. In doing so, we hope to promote recognition, reconciliation, and most importantly, peace.
